First of all, you have to ensure that the offer which you received was a genuine offer. When a Malaysian employer employs a foreigner, it is the responsibility of the employer to apply for a work permit for it's foreign employee. The Malaysian employer has to submit various documents to the immigration department and to justify that why it has to employ a foreigner instead of a local. The only documents the employer require from you are a photocopy of your passport, a medical examination certificate and your academic certificates and any other relevant supporting documents eg. a reference letter from your previous employer. For real and valid application and if all the documents are in order and the employer is able to justify why it needs to employ you, then an approval should be given out within 1 month. If the documents are not in order, the application could take months to process. For your information, if you were asked to apply for a work permit by your employer, then it is safe to say that the offer was a fake one. All documents for work permit application are to be submitted to the immigration department in Malaysia and there is no way you could do that ( the immigration won't even entertain you ). Accordingly all employers are to submit their applications on their own and most do that especially established and big companines but in reality there are some smaller companines who opt to use the services of agents which are not that reliable. Cheating by agents are not uncommon here. Whatever it is, remember always deal directly with your employer. Even if an agent require documents/ money from you, do not give to the agent directly. Verify with your prospective employer first. How to verify ? Do not just call the telephone number given to you by your agent. If possible seek the assistance from the Malaysian consulate office or at least you post the company name here (YA) so that we could try check if this company really exists. Just be careful, there are many cheatings going around.

You do not apply for the work permit yourself. Your prospective employer is to apply for a permit to employ a foreigner ....the employer has to provide proof that locals cannot be found to fill in the post. If approved, then the employer sends your particulars to the Immigration Dept. who will issue a "landing permit" to you, and after you arrive in Malaysia, your employer arranges to have your passport "stamped" with a work permit (it is a security sticker). You will have to undergo a medical examination and have all your fingers print recorded as part of the process. Note that without the landing permit, the immogration officer at the landing point will stamp your passport with a limited social visit pass which does not allow employment, and you will have to go back to your country to start over again -but with the landing permit, the officer will know what to do and facilitate the process (i.e. make known that the landing permit holder has landed, so that the Immigration Dept. town office is ready for you.). The whole process may take one to three months, depending how quick your employer can obtain his permit (he has to be interviewed and scrutinized(wait for his turn), then has to pay up your visa fee, work pass, insurance, guarrantee bond, etc. to the Immigration Dept. before that landing permit is issued.

Chesney and Jimmy are right. There s no need for you to go hunting around trying to get a work permit. Your prospective will do that for you. My work place has lots of foreigner from England, Oz, SA, Austria, India. All they have to do is to submit all the documents as per what Jimmy says. Don't get con into paying big bucks. Good luck.

If you get caught working for a Malaysian company on a visit visa, you will be in a lot of trouble. You can be put in jail and deported. You shouldn't risk it. However, I think you are allowed to go to Malaysia for a business trip and work, as you aren't being paid a salary from a Malaysian company. Getting a work permit is very difficult these days. There are only certain positions for which it will be given (English teacher is not one of them, ironically, when even the Immigration Department can't write proper English). I'm not sure which jobs can get work permits, so the best bet would be to check with the Immigration Office in your state (for KL it is Pusat Bandar Damansara, to get there take the U82 bus from KL Sentral), or the Head Immigration Office in Putrajaya (to get there take the E1 bus from Pasar Seni if you're in KL). Ask for someone who speaks English (say "Anda boleh berchakap Bahasa Inggeris?"). You may need to return to your country before the work permit will be issued. It usually takes around 4-6 weeks to be approved, if it does get approved at all.

as Michael says, you are not allowed to work on a visit visa in Malaysia; say you are here on a visit, find someone who wishes (and can) employ you - very few industries allow foreigners, such as palm oil plantations... - then your future wishful employer can start applying for a work permit for you. On the work permit papers it says that you must hand them in personally, but it also says that during the whole process you are not supposed to stay in Malaysia. It is a chicken and egg thing, really. Besides, immigrations are really not nice, I have a lot of hassles right now myself. But if you have a good agent they can apply for your work pass while you are in Malaysia on a visit visa, and eventually you will receive a work pass. The chances are, however, that getting the approval for a work pass exceeds the length of your visit visa so you will have to leave Malaysia at some point or other anyway.

1) No, you are not allowed to hold any job in Malaysia with your visit visa 2) No, you cannot convert your visit visa into working permit. What you can do is to go look for a job while you were in Malaysia and get your prospective employer to apply for a working permit but you still have to return to your country before the expiry of your visit visa

Your employer has to apply for an employment visa for you - you cannot. If you enter on a tourist visa, you generally have to leave while your employment visa application is pending - IF you can find a job with an employer willing to spend that kind of money on a visa for you. Also note that Malaysia's marketing focus is primarily westward, and you probably do not have the marketing skills, cultural knowledge, etc, to meet most companies' requirements. They want someone who really knows their market(s). And their main markets are not necessarily Pakistan.
